Vineyard Tours and wine tastings
John starts his tour amongst the vines at Chet Valley Vineyard - in this short clip he demonstrates the characteristics of Seyval Blanc vines, one of the grape varieties that he uses in both Skylark and Horatio Sparkling wines.
After the walk amongst the vines John shows visitors into his new winery where you will see his wine vats and other equipment.
The disgorging machine was purchased from Italy and is put to good use on a regular basis making sparkling wine.
Sampling wines from the vat is one of the winemakers perks! If you visit the winery for a vineyard tour and tasting before the wine is bottled you may get a chance to taste our wines directly from the vat.
The tour continues with a wine tasting of up to 5 wines with nibbles of cheese and charcuterie. In the summer you can enjoy sitting on the balcony overlooking the vines, enjoying the amazing view sipping a glass of Chet Valley Wine.
Winemakers tour and tasting £25
This very popular tour has limited places and so must be booked in advance. It is led by winemaker John Hemmant and his team (subject to availability). John was one of the first to plant a vineyard in Norfolk and produce award winning wines back in the 1990s. With his background in chemistry, farming and the arts he will inspire you with stories of his experiences making wine in Norfolk and his knowledge from his studies and travels to wine regions abroad both in the New and Old worlds.
The tour starts at the New Cellar door and shop and then quickly moves into the vineyard where you will walk amongst the vines for an interactive tour with John who encourages questions. After a short walk through the vineyard you will return to the new winery where John will explain the details of the wine making process and will demonstrate various steps in sparkling wine production. A real treat for those interested in wine, the wine making process and enjoying the results of this labour of love. Finally you will enjoy a tasting of 5 or more of Johns wines with nibbles of cheese and charcuterie, sitting under the walnut tree by the vineyard or on the winery balcony overlooking the vineyard enjoying the incredible views.

As is everyone else, we are keeping informed of developments as the situation regarding Covid-19 continues to evolve. Our heart goes out those who have been affected by the virus and all our friends and supporters who face so much uncertainty.
We have been rigorously following the recommendations of Public Health England and as ever our focus is always on exceptional levels of hygiene across all areas of the business. Fortunately, we have had no instances of anyone working at the vineyard or winery at Chet Valley contracting the virus.
However, after considering the new government updated guidelines, Chet and Waveney Valley Vineyard has made the following decision to minimise impact on our customers and team:
We are delighted to be able to say that we will reopen for Vineyard Tours & Tastings in April 2021 but with reduced group sizes to allow for social distancing. The date of the first tour will be confirmed in due course. We generally run tours on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons at 3pm until 5pm from April until harvest time at the end of September beginning of October.
Our priority is to keep everyone safe and we will be following the guidance of Public Health England and the government to ensure that we reduce any risk to our visitors. Meanwhile we will continue to ensure that we produce the highest quality wine and keep our warehouse and website up-and-running to deliver to our customers. All larger public events at the vineyard and winery remain suspended for an indefinite period, this will affect leaseholder and members events in particular.
Our retail team continue to be available to assist with wine orders, wine club and vine leasing advice and general enquiries via phone, email or the Chet Valley Vineyard website. You're welcome to collect bottles and cases from our Cellar door at the new winery which is now open for business. Please call ahead if possible and we can prepare your order. Or if you are in the area do pop by. You can still enjoy a glass of Chet Valley wine in the comfort of your own home or garden as we are offering our full mail order service – with free delivery on 6 or more bottles. Our full range of wines are available to order online at:
(wines for delivery can be mixed cases or single wine cases)
We are all in this together and feel confident that our customers may need a little sparkle in their lives from time-to-time to see them through.
For those who love sitting on our lovely balcony overlooking the vineyards we will keep posting regular photos and updates on our Chet Valley Facebook page and Instagram feeds. So you will be able to watch as the vineyard changes with the progression of the seasons.
We hope that you have kept well throughout these extremely difficult times, and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
With love and best wishes from the Hemmant family and the Chet Valley team.
